Book Review: The Lovely Bones by Alice Sebold

The Lovely Bones The Lovely Bones by Alice Sebold

My rating: 4 of 5 stars
I have never before been so engrossed, yet so repulsed by a book before in my life. Though written simply, there were passages in this book that literally had me gagging and wanting nothing more than to curl in my blankets and cry, or devour large tubs of ice-cream and several bottles of scotch.

This story, particularly in the earliest pages, is not for the faint of heart. If ever you've had a traumatic experience, prepare your therapist well before picking up this book. It's not that it's especially graphic, but the author manages to create the most profound sense of horror with nothing more than a few simple words. That is quite a talent.

Lovingly woven, this tale is actually, despite the initial few blows to the stomach, quite a wonderful tale of acceptance, of perseverance and of the bonds of love.

It's a good book, and worth its acclaim. Just... be careful if you're considering reading this.

I had wandered into the bookstore today - an unplanned, spur-of-the-moment decision - and after finding that my favourite authors have yet to produce a new book, I thought it would be nice to try something new. And so, I recalled your book reviews, and thought it would be lovely to pick one.

It was at this point that I realized I have the memory of a seive, and could not recall a single title. And far from my computer with it's internet access, I had no means to access your reviews.

I am bummed.

And now I find myself copying and pasting all interesting titles into a document that hopefully I can somehow upload to my blackberry. Else, manually enter it into my BB. Else, I will have to rely on good ol' paper.

You need an app for this. ;-)

I will try and find one!

Can you not access the internet from your BlackBerry?

I'm so happy you're reading my reviews! I have another one for tomorrow's post!

Thanks!

I have wi-fi, but no actual data plan, I find the rates too high, and my need of internet on my phone to be too low to be worth it. Mind you, nights like last night, I start wishing I had it or could at least find a free signal. :-)

I get that. I don't have a mobile phone for the exact same reason! Well, I guess for now having them all in a document on your BlackBerry is good enough!
